You’re 16, You’re Beautiful and You’re a Voter
Similarly, 16-year-olds who want to start voting should be able to obtain an “early voting permit” from their high schools upon passing a simple civics course similar to the citizenship test. Besides increasing voter registration, this system would reinforce the notion of voting as a privilege and duty as well as a right — without imposing any across-the-board literacy tests for those over 18.

And why stop at voting? Sixteen is a good starting point for phasing in adult rights and responsibilities, from voting to drinking to marriage. In reality, this is already when most people have their first jobs, their first drinks and their sexual initiations. The law ought to empower young people to negotiate these transitions openly, not furtively.

These ideas are nothing new to those in the youth rights movement, but it's not often you see them expressed on the New York Times op-ed page.

Halliburton/KBR in rape coverup Dec. 11th, 2007 @ 05:48 pm
Sickening.

Jamie Leigh Jones, now 22, says that after she was raped by multiple men at a KBR camp in the Green Zone, the company put her under guard in a shipping container with a bed and warned her that if she left Iraq for medical treatment, she'd be out of a job.

"Don't plan on working back in Iraq. There won't be a position here, and there won't be a position in Houston," Jones says she was told.

In a lawsuit filed in federal court against Halliburton and its then-subsidiary KBR, Jones says she was held in the shipping container for at least 24 hours without food or water by KBR, which posted armed security guards outside her door, who would not let her leave.

» Mercer for President
Meet Lee L. Mercer, Jr., a candidate with something to prove. Or about 70 things to prove. Finally, a candidate introduces a sensible plan for dealing with religion:
There is some concern about the U.S. Government Religions enforcements. I will enforce the U.S. Government Religions enforcement regulating its enforcements itself with its regulations pertaining to itself and according to its enforcements.

» 9th Circuit OKs strip-searching 13 year olds for Advil
Four years ago, school officials forced a 13 year old girl to remove her clothes because she was suspected of possessing ibuprofen. Now, the Ninth Circuit says they acted appropriately. More over on my fancy blog.

Update: See also this NYRA blog post, which sums it up thusly:
Those in charge think they can get away with treating teenagers so carelessly because, really, they don’t consider them their equals. They believe them to be lesser beings over whom they must dominate. They use the excuse that it’s for their own good, but who was this benefiting? If the girl had the ibuprofen, who is she harming? Theoretically, she could have taken the whole bottle if she wanted to kill herself, but that’s a stupid excuse, since there are so many other ways to kill yourself. Could she have given some to a student who was allergic or otherwise could not have it? Well, it’s up to that student to know better. That isn’t a terribly hard concept for a 13-year-old to grasp. Then again, it does seem a hard concept for their adult overlords to grasp.

» Abortion policy chart
Are pro-life policies really about the belief that abortion is equivalent to murder, or are they more about punishing women for having sex? This chart explains.
» Dis-Card
Andrew Card, former chief of staff under George W. Bush, received an honorary degree from the University of Massachusetts on Friday... and look at the reception he got. Classic.
» Sen. Maria Cantwell attempts, fails to justify voting for the blank check
From her form letter response:
I voted for the compromise Emergency Supplemental bill even though I was very disappointed with it. With U.S. troops serving in high risk areas, Congress must provide the proper funding so that our men and women have the body armor and equipment they need to do their jobs and come home safely. In the weeks and months ahead, I will continue to work with my colleagues to hold the president accountable, changing the course in Iraq , and bringing our troops home.

Way to buy into the GOP spin, Cantwell. You suck.

Our men and women already have the proper funding they need to get back on their planes and ships and come home. Congress has no obligation to spend another dime on Iraq.

If the war is de-funded, they aren't just going to be standing around in the desert, throwing sand at insurgents and carrying each other on their shoulders, because it's not going to be a surprise when the funding runs out. They can read newspapers. They'll plan ahead, because planning is what they do.
» Betrayed.
Senate, House votes on the Iraq blank check supplemental funding bill.

Notice anything wrong with that picture? Democratic senators Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray both voted for a bill that has no accountability for the war's lack of progress and no timetables for bringing our troops home.

Republican representative Cathy McMorris-Rodgers, who is normally wrong on everything, didn't vote at all this time, which means that my Democratic senators did more to keep the war going today than my Republican congresswoman.

» Great moments in punditry, four years later
Ah, remember when people thought the war in Iraq was going to be a piece of cake?

Update: Well, some people. Stupid people. Everyone else pretty much predicted exactly what ended up happening.

Now that's what I call an election. Say goodbye to State Senator Brad "Planned Parenthood hands out faulty condoms just to promote abortions" Benson (R-Lunacy), and say hello to Democratic control of the House and (once the race in Virginia is called) Senate.
» Poll
From Newsweek via dkos:
Democrats now outdistance Republicans on every single issue that could decide voters' choices come Nov. 7. In addition to winning--for the first time in the NEWSWEEK poll--on the question of which party is more trusted to fight the war on terror (44 to 37 percent) and moral values (42 percent to 36 percent), the Democrats now inspire more trust than the GOP on handling Iraq (47 to 34); the economy (53 to 31); health care (57 to 24); federal spending and the deficit (53 to 29); gas and oil prices (56 to 23); and immigration (43 to 34).

And even if the Republicans manage to bail out their ship before the midterms, they'll have a hard time matching their one-time strengths to voters' priorities. A third of registered voters, 33 percent, say the single most important issue that will decide their vote will be Iraq; compare to 20 percent who say the economy and only 12 percent who say terrorism, which ties with health care.

Meanwhile, Peter Goldmark just might unseat Republican rubber-stamp Cathy McMorris.

» Vote Peter Goldmark
Peter Goldmark is a scientist and rancher who's running for Congress against the incumbent Republican, Cathy McMorris.

Cathy McMorris voted against an amendment that would've prevented the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) from raiding the homes of legitimate medical marijuana users in states where use has been legalized, including Washington. In other words: Washington voters say "yes" to medical marijuana, Cathy McMorris says "fuck off" to Washington voters.

She also voted to renew the Patriot Act.

Peter Goldmark can take her down.

» Poor lonely Bill O'Reilly
Media Matters:
Bill O'Reilly asserted that "[m]any Americans ages 18 to 24 have no idea what's going on," stating that they "get their news from [Comedy Central host] Jon Stewart and their point of view from bomb-throwing entertainers." In fact, studies have shown that viewers of Comedy Central's The Daily Show with John Stewart are consistently better informed about current events than consumers of other media, and Daily Show viewers are significantly better educated than viewers of The O'Reilly Factor. Further, consumers of Fox News in general have been found to be significantly more misinformed about current events than consumers of other mainstream media.
